An organization called the Federation of National Standards (ISA) has been around since 1926. It was suspended in 1942 during World War II. But after World War, the ISA was approved by the United Nations Standards Coordinating Committee (UNSCC). Proposal for setting up a new global standards body.
In October 1946, ISA and UNSCC came from 25 countries at the Institute of Civil Engineers in London. And decided to set up a new international standardization organization.
On February 23, 1947, ISO officially came into operation
Due to the official name of the organization “International Organization for Standardization”. Has different abbreviations in different languages (IOS in English, OIN in French – stands for Organization internationale de normalization). So the founders of the organization decided to take the name of the organization as ISO. This often leads to a misunderstanding that ISO is the International Standards Organization.
ISO is not an acronym but a derivative of the ancient Greek word “isos” ἴσος. Meaning equality, fairness. In any country, in any language, the organization’s abbreviation is always ISO
Currently ISO has 163 members that are national standards bodies of countries. The ISO Central Secretariat located in Geneva, Switzerland is responsible for coordinating the organizational system.
Vietnam, represented by the General Department of Standards, Metrology and Quality, joined ISO since 1977 and has made certain contributions to this organization.
ISO sets the general standards for industrial and commercial management around the world and the ISO standard that we most often encounter is ISO 9001.
ISO 9001 is the internationally recognized product quality management standard system. Achieving ISO 9001 certification proves that the business has implemented an effective quality management system and meets the requirements of the standard.
Since its inception in 1987 up to now, the ISO 9001 series has 5 versions:
ISO 9001: 2015 Quality managemeint systems – Requirements. This is the latest version at the moment.
ISO 9001: 2015 replaces ISO 9001: 2008. This is an internationally recognized standard for the quality management of businesses. Applies to creation and control processes. An organization’s products and services that provide and regulate systematic controls. Actions to ensure that customer needs and expectations are met.
ISO 9001: 2015 was issued and took effect from September 15, 2015.
The improvement of ISO 9001: 2015 over the old versions is the approach to thinking based on risk. Help the organization identify factors that could cause its processes and management systems to deviate from its planned results.
